Prevalence and Causes of Infertility: Perspectives of Married Couples in the Southern Part of Volta Region

Abstract Infertility is the inability of a couple to conceive after one year of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and causes of infertility among couples in the southern part of the Volta Region of Ghana.
We employed descriptive cross-sectional study involving 322 married couples in the Southern Volta. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents. Data were collected between March and April 2019. This study included couples, 18 years and above who had stayed together for at least a year, were residing in the community for at least six months ‘prior to the study and have consented to participate in the study. Of the 322 couples, 35 (10.9%) had primary infertility, and 13 (4.0%) had secondary infertility. The infertility prevalence was of 14.9%. In all, 51% of the respondents had good level of knowledge on the causes of infertility.
