Federalism and State Autonomy: An Analysis of Centre-State Relations in India

Abstract | This research paper delves into the multifaceted relationship between federalism and state autonomy in India, providing a comprehensive analysis of the historical evolution, theoretical frameworks, political dynamics, economic dimensions, and legal contexts that shape centre-state interactions. It explores the constitutional design of Indian federalism, which uniquely accommodates the country’s diverse sociopolitical landscape through a blend of cooperative and competitive federal structures. The economic analysis highlights pivotal reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and their implications for fiscal federalism, while political dynamics examine the influence of party politics on centre-state relations. Additionally, the paper discusses the significant role of the judiciary in mediating disputes and enforcing federal principles. Case studies of specific states exemplify how regional disparities and priorities influence governance and policy-making. The findings suggest that while Indian federalism has demonstrated flexibility and resilience, ongoing challenges related to political partisanship, economic inequities, and legal ambiguities persist, requiring continual adaptation and dialogue to maintain a balanced federal structure. |
