Abstract Tephrosia purpurea is a flowering plant that has a pantropical distribution. It is throughout found in india and srilanka A decoction of the roots is given in dyspepsia, diarrhea, rheumatism, asthma and urinary disorders. Two native plants, Tephrosia purpurea (Linn.) Pers. (Fabaceae) and Mimusops elengi (Linn.) (Sapotaceae) were screened for their antimicrobial activity. Preliminary testing of antimicrobial activity of T. purpurea against 3 standard cultures In addition, ethonolic extracts were prepared from the bark of M. elengi and tested for its antimicrobial activity against the above bacterial isolates. Present work was undertaken to study antioxidant potential of the plant. It can be concluded that the aqueous extract of T. purpurea L. root can be used as antioxidant and it can be recommended for the treatment of various disease. The study concluded that the ethanolic extract of T. purpurea exhibits antioxidant activity in vivo and the ethyl acetate soluble fraction has improved antioxidant potential than the extract.
