The Kaladan Corridor: A Catalyst for Northeast India's Transformation

Author(s) Kunsang bhutia
Country India
Abstract Northeast India has been underdeveloped for decades, mainly due to socio-political unrest and its landlocked location with difficult terrains, which has hindered economic growth. This has led to a snowball effect, disrupting the socio-political environment. To overcome these challenges, the government's priority should be to invest in building infrastructure to boost the region's economy. The central government's initiative, the Kaladan multi-modal project through Myanmar connecting with the state of Mizoram, aims to provide connectivity to the Northeast with the Bay of Bengal, helping the region overcome its geographical vulnerability. This will boost economic activity and reduce dependency on the Siliguri corridor, giving New Delhi a strategic advantage. Therefore, the research analyzes the project's current status, the challenges it faces, and its impact on the overall socio-economic situation in the Northeast.
