An Ethnographic Research on Gulal Gota

Author(s) Unnati Sachdeva
Country India
Abstract Lac, a resinous secretion from female scale insects, has played a significant role in India’s culture and economy since ancient times, with mentions in Vedic texts and the Mahabharata. This study examines the Manihaar community of Jaipur, known for their expertise in crafting lac bangles and Gulal Gotas—lac spheres filled with colors for Holi. Through qualitative interviews, it explores their craftsmanship, daily lives, and challenges in preserving their tradition amidst modernization. The findings emphasize the cultural importance of lac and the need for government support to protect India's artisanal heritage.
Keywords Gulal Gota, Lac, Manihaar Community, Artisan, Tradition.
