Abstract Planned Development is the sine qua non for a holistic development of the state. Sikkim the Himalayan Kingdom was a protectorate of the Indian Union as a result of 1950 Indo-Sikkim treaty and later became its 22nd state. Sikkim climbed the development ladder through the development plans initially with the Seven Year plan in 1954. The present developments and the status of Sikkim is the outcome of this Planned Development and later through the Five Year plans. The paper discusses the thrust areas of these Plans through the decades paving the way for development and how far the state has fared in terms of overall development. It also reflects the gap in terms of development in pre-1975 and post-1975 period. This underlines the importance of having a concrete planned development in Sikkim for overall development. Primary and secondary data has been used for the analysis.
