Author(s) Julius Peter Gontako, Steven Theodori Bakari, Emmanueli John Chodo
Country Tanzania
Abstract E-waste in urban areas of Tanzania presents significant environmental and health challenges, exacerbated by the prevalence of informal recycling practices often seen in many developing countries. Such informal recycling frequently releases hazardous heavy metals, which can contaminate air and soil, posing serious health risks to local populations. This article examines the current state of e-waste management in urban Tanzania from a policy perspective. It analyses existing policies and regulations, identifies the challenges of managing e-waste, and proposes a strategy to improve the situation. Additionally, it explores the roles of decision-makers and the involvement of the private sector in e-waste management. The findings aim to inform policymakers, stakeholders, and the public about the importance of effective e-waste management practices for sustainable development.
