Interrogating the Role of Media in Changing the Status of Women in Kerala: A Study of the Perception of Youth

Abstract | Media plays a significant role in sharing public opinion, influencing social and cultural trends. This study seeks to analyze the stereotypical gender constructions propagated through social media platforms. It also examines the examine the transition of Malayalam Television serials in changing gender norms and assess the relation between media and women in breaking the romanticized beauty standards with the help of qualitative interviews conducted among people between 18-25 years of age in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The research found that social media platforms and movies played a crucial role in building the opinions and attitudes more than Television and Radio. When examining the viewpoint of Youth, media has a great influence on the portrayal of women in popular culture. Media also influenced the social and political status of women. The rise of social media platform changed the way women's issues are discussed and addressed in Media. |
