Abstract | Abstract This study examines the socioeconomic status, cultural practices, and barriers to social mobility within the Rajbanshi community of Northern West Bengal. The Rajbanshi people, often marginalized by caste and economic instability, face significant challenges such as limited access to education, inadequate healthcare, and poor living conditions. The community's reliance on agriculture and seasonal labor exacerbates economic insecurity. Additionally, caste discrimination further hampers social mobility and access to opportunities. Despite these difficulties, cultural identity plays a crucial role in maintaining resilience and social cohesion, with traditional festivals and rituals fostering a sense of belonging. However, modernization and globalization pose threats to the preservation of these cultural practices, especially among younger generations. This research explores the intersectionality of socioeconomic status, cultural heritage, and systemic barriers to mobility, with a focus on the impact of education, infrastructure, and government welfare schemes. Using a qualitative approach, the study includes semi-structured interviews with 120 Rajbanshi households from both rural and urban areas. The findings highlight the community's economic hardships, the importance of cultural traditions, and the systemic challenges that hinder their access to resources. This research fills a critical gap in the literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the Rajbanshi community’s socioeconomic and cultural dynamics, offering valuable insights for policymakers, NGOs, and community leaders to support social inclusion and empowerment efforts. |
