The Impact of Rainfall on Uae Economy -A Comprehensive Analysis

Abstract | The UAE, characterized by its arid climate, faces increasing challenges from changing rainfall patterns driven by climate change. Historically, rainfall trends have shown a decline in annual precipitation and rainy days, with a notable shift around 1999 linked to global climate phenomena such as the Southern Oscillation Index. However, projections indicate a significant increase in annual precipitation—up to 30% by the end of the century—accompanied by more frequent and intense rainfall events. While this presents opportunities for sectors like agriculture, it also poses substantial risks to key economic sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, construction, transportation, and retail. This study examines the socioeconomic impacts of rainfall in the UAE, revealing disproportionate effects on low-income populations and identifying critical vulnerabilities in the country’s infrastructure and economic systems. Sectoral disruptions include delays and financial losses in construction, reduced tourism revenues, transportation inefficiencies, and retail downturns during adverse weather. The findings highlight the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure, sustainable urban planning, and comprehensive disaster response mechanisms to mitigate economic risks and adapt to evolving precipitation patterns. By addressing these challenges, the UAE can enhance its economic resilience and capitalize on emerging opportunities in a changing climate |
