The Socioeconomic Impacts of E-waste in Juba: The Case Study of Kator Payam of Juba City, South Sudan

Abstract | Electronic waste (e-waste), also, commonly referred to as waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is a global concern in the contemporary world. It poses increasingly significant risks or dangers to the environment and its ecosystem because of the volume being generated, toxic substances in them, and the complexity of its poor management especially, in the developing world. South Sudan, like other emerging developing economies, generates a significant volume of e-waste yet, lacks the necessary infrastructure or facilities to recycle e-waste. While e-waste is a business opportunity for the people of Kator Payam and Juba at large, as the valuable materials that can be recovered can earn them incomes while the industry opens up opportunities for job creation, there is a huge concern about the levels of informal practices when it comes to disposal. This study looks into critical analysis of the socioeconomic impacts of e-waste resulting from the management mechanisms in place through the application of the “Social-ecological model” and its conceptual framework and the “Integrated Economic Impact Model (IEIM)” to analyze data and identify potential impacts of management approaches from both upstream (primary and secondary e-waste generation) and down-stream on e-waste management by recycling among others on the society and the economy at large. |
