Abstract | People with disabilities (PWD’s) remain neglected in many areas including employment. Their unemployment rate is significantly high when compared with those without disabilities. Severe unemployment and poor wages ended majority of them live in poverty. PWD’s are suffering discrimination, social exclusion and prejudice. It is a major health problem especially in developing country like India. In India, a majority of the disabled resides in rural area where accessibility, availability and utilization of rehabilitation and its cost effectiveness are the major issues. Musculoskeletal conditions are frequently cited as among the most common and disabling of the chronic diseases. These conditions affect the quality of life through increased disability, limited activity, physical pain, and impairment. Because of the nature of the disabilities encountered in the community, the emphasis in therapy is on management of the disability rather than on ‘treatment or cure’. It will be not out of context to assert that the state must endeavour to bring them to the same level with others of the same society not as a matter of state-generosity or societal grace but as a matter of their rightful entitlement as follow human beings. |
