Abstract | Artificial intelligence (AI) is fast altering the landscape of cybersecurity, and it is becoming a double-edged sword. AI improves defensive and offensive capabilities while also giving cyber enemies significant power, such as the ability to execute complex, automated cyber-attacks. Specifically, this paper reviews the basics of AI in cybersecurity, focusing on its use in defensive as well as offensive pivot operations. This examines the types of AI-powered cyber-attacks, such as adversarial machine learning and automated social engineering. Threats such as anomaly detection and behavioural analysis are discussed as detection and defence mechanisms to counteract these threats. This is demonstrated through illustrative real-world case studies. Finally, ethical implications are discussed, and opportunities and challenges of AI across future trends and emerging technologies are delineated in relation to cybersecurity. With AI progressing, the need to develop a robust defensive strategy to secure digital systems and protect sensitive information is not negotiable. |
