Abstract | Buccal drug delivery systems represent a promising frontier in pharmaceutical technology, offering a non-invasive route for drug administration that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and hepatic first-pass metabolism. This method leverages the buccal mucosa’s rich vascularization and permeability to enhance drug bioavailability. Recent advancements have focused on developing mucoadhesive films, tablets, and patches that ensure prolonged contact with the mucosal surface, improving drug absorption and patient compliance. Future innovations are expected to incorporate nanotechnology and bioadhesive polymers to further optimize drug release profiles and therapeutic efficacy. Additionally, the integration of smart drug delivery systems, capable of responding to physiological conditions, holds significant potential for personalized medicine. As research progresses, buccal drug delivery systems are poised to become a cornerstone in the administration of biologics and other complex therapeutics, addressing challenges such as enzymatic degradation and poor solubility. |
