Legal Education in India: Historical Evolution and the NEP 2020 Vision

Author(s) Shabnam Akbar Pathan
Country India
Abstract Legal education in India has a rich and complex history, evolving from its colonial roots to meet the needs of an independent, democratic nation. Initially introduced to train legal practitioners for the British administration, it gradually expanded to address broader societal and constitutional concerns. Over the decades, reforms such as the establishment of National Law Universities and regulatory frameworks by the Bar Council of India have reshaped legal education. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a pivotal moment, aiming to modernize education across disciplines. This research examines the historical journey and NEP’s transformative vision for legal education in India.
