Abstract | The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into defense technologies has revolutionized modern warfare, introducing autonomous weapons systems (AWS) capable of operating without direct human intervention. While these systems promise enhanced precision and operational efficiency, they also present profound ethical and political dilemmas. This paper explores the evolution of AWS, categorizing their levels of autonomy and analyzing the underlying technologies, such as machine learning and sensor integration. It delves into the ethical challenges of delegating life-and-death decisions to machines, accountability gaps, and risks of misuse while scrutinizing compliance with International Humanitarian Law. The political dimensions include the AI arms race, the proliferation of AWS, and challenges in international governance. Case studies illustrate the real-world implications, emphasizing the urgency for robust regulation. By proposing ethical frameworks, oversight mechanisms, and the inclusion of human decision-making, this research underscores the necessity of global collaboration to mitigate risks and ensure that the development of AWS aligns with humanitarian values and international security. |
