Abstract | Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus from the Paramyxoviridae family, has been recognized as a significant cause of respiratory infections, particularly in children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Despite its relatively recent discovery in 2001, HMPV has been implicated in various respiratory illnesses ranging from mild upper respiratory infections to severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. This article comprehensively reviews current HMPV research, including its molecular biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical implications, and emerging therapeutic options. It also explores future directions in HMPV research, focusing on vaccine development, antiviral therapies, and improved diagnostic approaches. |
