Author(s) V.Geetha

Abstract The pharmaceutical industry has traditionally relied on synthetic preservatives to prolong the shelf-life and maintain the efficacy of drugs. However, increasing consumer demand for natural and sustainable solutions has led to a shift towards natural preservatives. This review explores the development of natural preservatives in the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on their sources, mechanisms of action, advantages, and challenges. Natural preservatives, such as essential oils, plant extracts, and fermentation-based substances, are increasingly being incorporated into pharmaceutical formulations as alternatives to synthetic chemicals. This paper highlights the current trends, innovations, and future prospects of natural preservatives, considering their safety, effectiveness, and regulatory aspects. The role of natural preservatives in reducing environmental impact and enhancing product sustainability is also discussed.
Keywords Natural preservatives, pharmaceutical industry, essential oils, plant extracts, sustainability, fermentation, drug formulations, shelf-life extension, regulatory challenges.
