Author(s) Mantosh Baitha, Dr. Jagdish Prasad
Country India
Abstract This report delves into the performance of the Indian banking system, with a focus on non-performing assets (NPAs), deposits, investments, and advances. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of the sector’s challenges, performance, and outlook amidst changing regulatory and economic environments. The analysis includes quantitative methods, case studies, and a review of bank balance sheets from six public and private financial institutions. Key findings point to the need for further investigation into the impacts of economic volatility and sector-specific issues, particularly in relation to NPAs. The report underscores the varied nature of banks' investment portfolios, particularly in corporate bonds and government securities, and stresses the importance of a well-balanced, closely monitored investment approach through risk-return analysis. Patterns of loan advances and disbursements reveal crucial insights into credit distribution across sectors, which is central to the banking ecosystem. The research emphasizes the need for effective risk management to reduce NPAs and mitigate credit risks. Furthermore, the study suggests that the strategies and results from public, private, and multinational banks can offer valuable insights for cross-sector knowledge sharing
