Abstract | Legal aid or legal support in India aims to ensure equal access to justice for all, especially for the weaker sections of society. Rooted in the Constitution and shaped by key historical developments, legal aid evolved through various committees and reports, leading to the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. This Act established the National Legal Services Authority NALSA to oversee legal aid services nationwide, alongside State Legal Services Authorities SLSA and District Legal Services Authorities DLSA. These bodies organize Lok Adalats, spread legal awareness, and provide free legal assistance to eligible individuals, including women, children, the constitutional right to legal aid, ensuring that justice is not denied due to economic or social disadvantages. |
