Reye's syndrome: An Overview

Abstract | Reye’s syndrome, a rare but severe illness, was first identified in 1963 by Australian pathologist Douglas Reye. This potentially fatal condition primarily affects children, typically those between the ages of 4 and 12, during or after recovery from viral infections such as chickenpox, influenza, mumps, or measles. It involves the acute onset of brain swelling (encephalopathy) and liver failure. The syndrome is strongly associated with the use of aspirin or aspirin-like products during viral illness. While the exact cause remains unknown, the condition can lead to significant morbidity and a high mortality rate, ranging from 20% to 40%. Early identification of symptoms and prompt treatment can help reduce risks. The management is supportive and involves collaboration with pediatricians, neurologists, and hepatologists. |
