An Inquiry into Transfer of territories of Jammu and Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh by British

Author(s) Dr. Kanwal Singh
Country India
Abstract This paper intended to investigate the reasons behind the transfer of territories to Gulab Singh and thus carving an independent state of Jammu and Kashmir. The transfer of territories is a matter of debate among historians, writers, and officials of the English Government at that time. There are diverse opinions among the scholars regarding their explanations for the transferring of territories to Gulab Singh and helping him in carving an Independent state. Also, an attempt has been made to look into the causes and circumstances which enable the British to adopt the favourable policy towards Gulab Singh at the point time when the East Indian Company was expanding their empire throughout India by annexing princely states of India. Through this paper, an attempt has been made to bring out various dimensions regarding this issue.
