Abstract | ABSTRACT: Ransomware has emerged as a global threat, severely affecting both security infrastructures and economies worldwide. This research examines multijurisdictional approaches to protecting against ransomware attacks, with a focus on the critical role digital forensics plays in identifying, investigating, and prosecuting these crimes. The study covers how digital evidence is collected, analyzed, and preserved in ransomware cases, and emphasizes international cooperation in handling these incidents across borders. Beginning with an overview of ransomware variants, trends, and their global impacts, it underscores the importance of digital forensics in decrypting data, preserving evidence, and aiding in the prosecution of cybercriminals. Key areas of focus include best practices for managing encrypted data and ransomware artifacts, advancements in forensic technologies, and the role of artificial intelligence in speeding up investigations. Special attention is given to India's evolving cybersecurity landscape, exploring legal frameworks, infrastructure limitations, and region-specific challenges. Understanding the case laws provides real-world examples of how digital forensic practices and legal strategies are implemented in ransomware investigations globally and within India. The paper also delves into privacy and ethical concerns that arise during ransomware investigations, particularly during evidence decryption. It advocates for more robust cross-border collaboration, highlighting the complexities of international evidence sharing and the need for harmonized cybercrime laws to effectively prosecute ransomware perpetrators operating from jurisdictions with weaker cybersecurity regulations. |
