The Strategic Role of Indian Air Bases: Analysing the Importance of Forward Bases

Abstract	This dissertation delves into the historical evolution and contemporary strategic significanceof Indian Air Force (IAF) air bases, with a particular emphasis on Forward Operating Bases(FOBs). Tracing the development of these critical assets from post-independence to the presentday, examining how pivotal conflicts, including those of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999have shaped the IAF's infrastructure and operational doctrine. The study further elucidates thestrategic role of FOBs and Advance Landing Grounds in enhancing deterrence, rapid responsecapabilities, and operational flexibility, while also exploring the concept of dual-use airfieldsand their contributions to both national security and regional development. By analysing theIAF's organizational structure, aircraft inventory, and integration with allied forces, this paperprovides a comprehensive overview of how India's air base strategy addresses currentgeopolitical challenges and evolving security threats.
